Shiharu is a high school student who loves kids, lives in an orphanage, and works at a daycare... Until the handsome uncle of two-year-old twins offers her a raise if she'll be their babysitter. Often relying on memories of her mother's actions for guidance, Shiharu quickly finds herself falling in love with her new makeshift family.
Love So Life, is one of my favourite mangas, sure I've been saying that for pretty much every one I've been posting, but hey - might as well go through the favourites first!

First I'll say that I'll be reviewing a lot of manga that isn't published in English, I read a lot of scans online, and when they get licensed by an English publisher they get taken off the web (and that's when I buy them - you can find this via the mangafox link above).

Love So Life, is one of those mangas that leaves you with warm and fuzzy feeling inside after each page, its adorable, fun, cute and a very satisfying read.

The twins are so adorable, watching how they were such horrors with their uncle to turning into such angels when they get to daycare and to Shiharu - who they act like perfect angels too... is very amusing. The poor guy didn't stand a chance, so he pretty much begged Shiharu to babysit for him on days when he is busy at work and when she isn't at school.

Yes, she's in high school and the uncle Matsunaga (his last name, no idea what his first name is - probably wasn't paying attention when it was said, but they usually just call him Matsunaga-san) is a popular TV news presenter, there is a different in age... but they are so going to end up together... or I'll cry.

Don't worry about the age gap, it really is cute and its a very, very, very slow evolving romance, I'll honestly be surprised if anything happens before she leaves school.

Matsunaga has pretty much realised his feelings and is very wary of how he acts around Shiharu, because she's so young and he doesn't want to come off as creepy (haha) and well she's very oblivious to everything except taking care of children.

There's only one problem I have with this manga... I'm absolutely terrified that the parents are going to come back and take the twins away, I think it's inevitable, since well the kids belong with their parents and well they were only ever going to stay with Matsunaga for a short time, but when they go it's going to be so sad! But hey, maybe Shiharu and Matsunaga can console each other!

All up, this manga is extremely cute, its so fun watching the twins grow up and see what questions they will ask next or what crazy thing they will do and what Shiharu will say to get them in line.. and of course the fumbling romance is awesome as well! I highly recommend this to anyone who loves something light and cute and those who don't should read it anyway haha.

Review: Clarity By Kim Harrington

Title: Clarity
Author: Kim Harrington
Series: Clarity
Pages: 246
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Scholastic
Published: March 1st 2011
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository
When you can see things others can't, where do you look for the truth?
This paranormal murder mystery will have teens reading on the edge of their seats.
Clarity "Clare" Fern sees things. Things no one else can see. Things like stolen kisses and long-buried secrets. All she has to do is touch a certain object, and the visions come to her. It's a gift. And a curse.
When a teenage girl is found murdered, Clare's ex-boyfriend wants her to help solve the case - but Clare is still furious at the cheating jerk. Then Clare's brother - who has supernatural gifts of his own - becomes the prime suspect, and Clare can no longer look away. Teaming up with Gabriel, the smoldering son of the new detective, Clare must venture into the depths of fear, revenge, and lust in order to track the killer. But will her sight fail her just when she needs it most?
Clarity has actually been sitting on my shelf for a while now. I'm not sure why it took me so long to read it as I jumped at the chance to buy it when I read the intriguing synopsis.  I always love a good mystery, and love it even more when the main character has a supernatural power to help her solve the case along with her normal sleuthing skills!

Kim Harrington had me at page one... Clarity is a sarcastic witty and intelligent heroine, so I immediately took a liking to her and the way she dealt with the two typical jocks that were making fun of her because of her family and her gift. She didn't stop there either, Kim had me in fits of laughter with one witty line from the next.

The plot was thrilling! It kept me guessing, and thinking up one crazy theory after the next. It wasn't too fast paced or was it too slow, it had just the right amount of both... and I suppose that could be said about the romance also!

My only problem was the love triangle... I'm in a 'I hate all love triangles' faze so excuse me for this part Kim.

Although I didn't really have a rage hate fest for this love triangle. It was done very well. Gabriel, *drools* was so very, very DELICIOUS! He had that bad boy vibe, and since his dad is the chief of police he had that whole ruggedly handsome bad boy working for the good guys thing going on for him - which was very yummy.

Then there was Justin.. *cough*go die*cough* -yes I'm being harsh... because I actually don't mind him (I obviously like Gabriel better), yes he's Clarity's douchey ex-boyfriend who cheated on her with the town bike. But, well he's the ultimate good boy - puppy dog eyes and all, as the book progresses, I managed to get a soft spot for the goody-too-shoes mayor's son.

BUT...

Clarity hated on Justin with a passion, then BOOM! She finds out some things and was all gooey for him again! Enter... the uncertainty for the two guys, which made me want to scream!

Yes, I get she has history with Justin and he didn't mean to cheat on her, but the cocky bastard is so sure he can get her back! Move over pretty boy and let Gabriel take centre stage! Out with the old and in with the new... should be Clare's new motto!

Although Gabriel does need to get over his issue's with her power... but well I think he did a damn good job of coming to terms with it so far and that Clare should cut him some slack!

Or maybe she should just kick them both to the curb and be a single woman, all proud and free and never looking back (haha, doubt that will happen though).

Even though I've spent most of this review talking about the romance, Clarity is such a fun, thrilling, intriguing read with one hell of a mystery and suspicions just seeping off the pages! I can't wait to read Perception (which will hopefully show up on my doorstep soon!) and any other books that Kim Harrington creates in the future!

Review: Illuminate by Aimee Agresti

Title: Illuminate
Author: Aimee Agresti
Series: Gilded Wings
Pages: 531
Format: eARC
Publisher: Harcourt
Release Date: March 6th 2012
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository
Haven Terra is a brainy, shy high school outcast. But everything begins to change when she turns sixteen. Along with her best friend Dante and their quiet and brilliant classmate Lance, she is awarded a prestigious internship in the big city— Chicago—and is sent to live and work at a swanky and stylish hotel under the watchful eyes of a group of gorgeous and shockingly young-looking strangers: powerful and alluring hotel owner Aurelia Brown; her second-in-command, the dashing Lucian Grove; and their stunning but aloof staff of glamazons called The Outfit.

As Haven begins falling for Lucian, she discovers that these beautiful people are not quite what they seem. With the help of a mysterious book, she uncovers a network of secret passageways from the hotel’s jazz-age past that leads her to the heart of the evil agenda of Aurelia and company: they’re in the business of buying souls. Will they succeed in wooing Haven to join them in their recruitment efforts, or will she be able to thwart this devilish set’s plans to take the souls of her classmates on prom night at the hotel?
When I first discovered Illuminate I thought that it sounded like a new interesting and fun book with a stunning cover! So naturally, I was delighted and shocked when I got an e-mail from Rachel over at Harcourt with a copy of Illuminate! So a big thank you to Rachel and Aimee for giving me a chance to read this amazing book!

I admit, at the start of the book Haven certainly had her moments that made me cringe in embarrassment for the poor girl, I just wanted to leap through my kindle and shake some sense into her, or actually shake some sense out of her.

But I shouldn't have worried because it wasn't long until I stopped cringing and mentally attacking Haven, and was so enraptured in the world that Aimee had created, that I hardly had time to put my kindle down because I couldn't stop reading!

The story was magnificent, it kept me on the edge of my seat, worried and yet so excited to find out what would happen next, I kept thinking what would the mysterious book tell Haven next? When would she realise that Lance was hot for her? & that even though Lucien is a bundle of yum he wasn't the guy for her? & most of all when would she step up and slap that bitch Aurelia in the face? (yes, i really thought all these things.)

It delivered all my hopes and so much more!

I just loved how Aimee had put together three innocent teens who were oblivious to the massive evil plot surrounding them - working in a hotel with bad guys at every corner! Just thinking that their employers were a little odd and obsessed with only hiring pretty people... Then when they discover the truth, no running or screaming for the door (well there was that one incident.. but she wasn't screaming), but they sucked it up and decided to brave the badies and not only did they do just that but they fooled them into thinking they were still in the dark! And all at the same time as trying to unravel the big evil plot and eventually save the day... it was just mind bogglingly awesome!

I think that every girl will learn a vital lesson from this book (if she didn't already know)... NEVER trust a pretty/hot guy if he is trying too hard! Have fun looking and flirting back, but ALWAYS question their motives... especially if you catch them kissing an older drop dead gorgeous woman... but maybe that's just the cynic in me!? (haha) This was another part where I was screaming at Haven to open her eyes - but don't worry readers, Haven is a smart cookie and will not disappoint you!

Well I think that's all I can really say without bringing out a massive bunch of spoilers! Trust me I could gush about the characters and plot non-stop for ages but well I think I've gone on for quite enough already! Everyone should make sure to pick up a copy of Illuminate in March and keep out an eye for any of Aimee's books in the future... I sure will be!

Manga Mondays: Silver by Penny Jordan & Art by Fujita Kazuko

Manga Mondays is an amazing meme hosted by Alison Can Read!

Title: Silver
Author: Penny Jordan
Artist:
Fujita Kazuko
Type: Manga
My Anime List | Mangafox | Goodreads
Geraldine Francis is the innocent daughter of a wealthy aristocrat. Being sheltered all her life, she is oblivious to her cousin Charles' true intentions when he lures her in and makes her fall hopelessly in love with him. It is only after the murder of her father that she realizes his love was nothing but love for the money and the land that came with her name. She vows revenge, and she throws away her past in order to become "Silver," the perfect woman. With a new face, and a new lease on life, she will turn the tables on the man whom she once loved so that this time, it is he who will be left with nothing.
Silver is a manga adapted from the novel Silver by Penny Jordan (first published in 1989), if you didn't already know - Japanese love their western stories and especially their romance... the amount of Harlequin books that get adapted to manga, is vast... and I tend to cringe away from them, because not all American or Historical Romance books get adapted very well.

I was bored and searching for something new to read, when I stumbled upon Silver, usually when I find out the manga is an adaption, I wrinkle my nose and move on, but the synopsis had me intrigued... I must say that I'm a sucker for a good romance dashed in murder, intrigue and deception - so this was right up my alley.

I will say that this is an adult manga, and the characters do get naked (but with all manga the parts are all magically not there and the most flesh you see is naked chests - on both sexes).

So the manga starts with: Geraldine as an innocent (stupid) young girl at fourteen, she makes some silly mistakes - like falling in love with a power hungry douche (who's her cousin) and falls into his, and his equally evil mother's trap to steal away her father's fortune and estate... and her inheritance.

No matter what her father and her hunky tutor and protector Jake, tell her about Charles's real intentions, she doesn't listen and after running away and almost consummating their love for each other, her father gives in to their engagement.

So some things happen, Charles kills dear old daddy, fires hunky Jake - who leaves with giving Gerry a very passionate kiss... then our flighty heroine gets shipped off to boarding school until she is eighteen and Charles refuses to see her until then.

What does our heroine do? Eat as much as she can to fill the void that her father and Charles has left her.. it's a bit along the lines of 'oh no I can't see Charles.. what am I going to do but eat all these yummy treats my good old servant is sending me!?'

Okay.. I'm making fun of it - but really I just kind of wanted to kill little Geraldine at the start, she was just so stupid!

But don't worry, after she goes back to meet Charles when she turns eighteen, he is horrified at how much weight she has gained in such little time and goes length's to stay away from her, so her virtue remains intact!

Basically she discovers that he is cheating on her, with numerous amounts of women, what he really thinks of her, and that he's never loved her. Which leads her to figuring out that it was he who killed her father all those years ago and that Jake was right in his accusations.

So naturally, she swears revenge.

So much happens, its kind of crazy... but basically she fakes her death, signs up to a retreat to loose weight and then goes under the knife for a complete transformation, so no one would ever recognize her.  She becomes the ideal woman, one that any man would lust over.

Her only problem is that she's still a shy, innocent virgin on the inside and has no idea how to be confident and lure men in for the kill... so she hires someone to teach her.

Turns out to be her old sexy tutor Jake... who is a retired drug detective, but he's now blind. Jake has been through a lot since he last met Gerry, she sounds familiar but thinking that the young girl he once knew was dead, he never suspects her (plus he also thought that Gerry gave her virginity to Charles).

Things heat up, heat down, get crazy and the shit hits the fan intertwining both Jake and Gerry's revenge... and the ending was pretty good - except for one part - which I thought was silly... but that was only a minor detail and I don't want to spoil.

For adaptions, Silver was amazing - it had the right flow from story to the pictures and everything went along quite smoothly, so naturally I'm intrigued to read the novel that started it all (which I will be doing eventually). I recommend this to anyone who loves a good romance mixed in with lots of drama!

Review: Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

Title: Seraphina
Author: Rachel Hartman
Pages: 464
Format: Netgalley eARC
Publisher: Random House
Release Date: July 10th 2012
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository
Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty's anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.

Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen's Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

In her exquisitely written fantasy debut, Rachel Hartman creates a rich, complex, and utterly original world. Seraphina's tortuous journey to self-acceptance is one readers will remember long after they've turned the final page.
Being a fan of fantasy books and all things dragons, I rushed over to NetGalley as soon as I discovered Seraphina. (thanks to someone's IMM alerting me about this awesome novel!)

In my books nothing beats a good fantasy novel, steeped in intrigue and romance... and Seraphina definitely delivers that and much more!

There's a lot more to Seraphina than meets the eye and I'm not only talking about the main character either, but the book itself! At first when I started reading Seraphina, I felt like it was a bit bland with no emotion, but oh boy was I wrong! Seraphina is one of those books with characters that felt real and it just had so many different emotions packed into its pages and as I kept reading, and got to know the characters and Seraphina herself a bit better I was blown away with all the vast amount of emotions in this one book.

Rachel Hartman is a genius - how she managed to put so much into one book and yet make it so it wasn't overwhelming is beyond me and she deserves a pat on the back, a bright gold star and lots of cookies for her outstanding work!

The story wasn't boring for a second, there was so much that kept my mind thinking, mysteries to solve everywhere from the little to the big, relationships to sniff out and discover how deep they were and the dragon's themselves, such complex creatures showing little emotion were so much fun to work out, especially when they said or did something that offended a human without them meaning to.

I think the dragon's being like that and the human's mistaking a lot of their intentions and vice a versa and Seraphina herself stuck in the middle and only starting to discover herself, was just so much fun to me because I love working out a good mystery, the plot the characters and the world kept me occupied and I just couldn't put it down.

Orma was one of my favourite characters... hell I loved them all! But I think my favourite thing with Orma was that he was a dragon who worked so hard to remain stiff and emotionless and that when he did show his emotions, it was just so raw and strong... which made me teary or giggle everytime, I can't wait to see more of him in the future!

Princess Glisselda annoyed me a bit at the start, but like all the other character's she had a hidden depth and was revealed to be such a fun, smart (after she got over herself and prejudice's) and intriguing character... although I will admit I'm pretty freaked out and worried about what will happen in the future with her, Kiggs and Seraphina, because I got the feeling at one point that Glisselda knew about Kiggs and Seraphina's feelings for each other and was trying to set them up at one point, but then near the end I'm left thinking maybe I was wrong and 'ooh shit whats going to happen!?' But I guess only time will tell!

Kiggs! I love him, he is such a noble & straightforward character that will do anything in his power to protect those he cares about and find justice. I can't wait to see his character development in a hopefully second book... along with all the other fantastic characters in Rachel Hartman's amazing world of Dragon's and Humans.

Lastly my favourite character is Seraphina herself! Watching her grow from a timid young woman who didn't think that she could trust or love anyone who hated to lie but remained to do so to keep herself safe, to slowly begin to have courage in herself and others to even damning the consequences from people finding out the truth... was so worth it!

Bring on book two! & if there isn't going to be a book two... I'm going to cry for weeks EVER!

I recommend all lovers of Tamora Pierce or any lover of a good fantasy book to pick this one up! Even if fantasy isn't your favourite genre, Seraphina will be sure to leave you in awe!

Review: Reckoning by Lili St. Crow

Title: Reckoning
Author: Lili St. Crow
Series: Strange Angels
Pages: 307
Format: Paperback
Publisher: Razorbill
Published: November 1st 2011
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository
Nobody expected Dru Anderson to survive this long. Not Graves. Not Christophe. Not even Dru. She's battled killer zombies, jealous djamphirs, and bloodthirsty suckers straight out of her worst nightmares. But now that Dru has bloomed into a full-fledged svetocha - rare, beautiful, and toxic to all vampires - the worst is yet to come.

Because getting out alive is going to cost more than she's ever imagined. And in the end, is survival really worth the sacrifice?

DRU ANDERSON'S NOT AFRAID OF THE DARK.

BUT SHE SHOULD BE.
Being a big fan of the Strange Angel's series I was beyond excited to get my hands on Reckoning, the final book in the series to find out what would happen to Dru and her companions... then the book came out and not being able to wait patiently for it to get to my mailbox I started reading reviews zealously and became terrified.

That's right, reviews... made me terrified to read the end of one of my favourite series!

After I read some people's negative comments that the ending was 'shit' and other not so nice words I started to question and pick apart all the bad things that could happen at the end, that she could end up with the wrong guy, that everyone was going to DIE... so when Reckoning finally showed up in the mail I placed it wearily on the shelf next to the others in the series and backed away to a safe distance in case it exploded.

Not really.. I'm just being melodramatic, cause I'm awesome like that!

But no, I really did leave it on the shelf for too long, but putting my big girl pants on (an no not Bridget Jone's granny pants version) I finally picked up Reckoning, thinking 'Meh, what could be so bad?'

...Nothing really. After all my melodrama I found myself quite enjoying it, even the "horrible" ending wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. Sure I can see why everyone was chucking a hissy, but I thought that it was a satisfying ending for the book and for what Dru had been through, the conclusion reflected the person she was at that exact moment.

Was it a good ending for the end of a series? Hell no! It felt too much like an ending you would have knowing that there was another book coming, or a new series coming out shortly after... I would like to see more development more of a conclusion, a lot of the new problems that came out from the end of Reckoning deserve to be solved... So is Dru's story finished? I bloody well hope not! But hey who knows! (further investigation is needed on my part)

I'm satisfied, yet unsatisfied and it's possible that I wasn't raging mad because I expected the apocalypse of all endings.

So now that my little confession and rant is over I should probably talk about the rest of the book! Reckoning had what all the other Strange Angel books had...

Those being:
  • Dru being an idiot at times and me wanting to kill her.
  • Dru being her normal hilarious, kick-ass and snarky self.
  • Graves... being kick-ass, yet still hot and nerdy.
  • Christophe being douchey and hot at the same time.
  • Ash being adorable!
  • Running away from bad guy, being caught by bad guy, escaping again and kicking ass.
  • Oh and of course the standard... Dru not being able to decide on which boy awesome guy or creepy yet hot old dude to choose.
Okay so you get the drift, I'm not mocking or anything, I actually like all these things... I must admit though I wanted more action, more romance and I found some things were just a repeat of all the other books rolled up to the bad guy actually dying this time. It was good yet I just wanted MORE!

I really really really really hope that Lili St. Crow isn't finished telling Dru's story because although I didn't mind the ending, there is just so much left unsaid, new mysteries to solve and definitely a lot of room for her to grow into the awesome leader she should be. (not to mention other character's development after what happens!)

Eight years after Graceling, Bitterblue is now queen of Monsea. But the influence of her father, a violent psychopath with mind-altering abilities, lives on. Her advisors, who have run things since Leck died, believe in a forward-thinking plan: Pardon all who committed terrible acts under Leck’s reign, and forget anything bad ever happened. But when Bitterblue begins sneaking outside the castle—disguised and alone—to walk the streets of her own city, she starts realizing that the kingdom has been under the thirty-five-year spell of a madman, and the only way to move forward is to revisit the past. Two thieves, who only steal what has already been stolen, change her life forever. They hold a key to the truth of Leck’s reign. And one of them, with an extreme skill called a Grace that he hasn’t yet identified, holds a key to her heart.
